USS Alert was reclassified as a Submarine Tender in 1912 and given the designation (AS-4), 17 July 1920.USS Alert was commissioned and decommissioned at Mare Island six additional times between 31 July 1882 and her final decommissioning, 9 March 1922.Decommissioned, 31 July 1882, at Mare Island Navy Yard, Vallejo, CA.Laid down in 1873 as an iron-hulled screw steamer at John Roach and Sons, Chester, PA.
